The setup. The photo. The finished image. I love doing projects like this with people where there is a plan in place and the desire to make it happen.

Recent product shots, some tech, some review. Sometimes it’s interesting to see them uncropped, without text over them.
Schwinn American. I’ve owned this bike for years – bought it at the thrift store as seen for $39.99 – and know very little about it.
Shot a few months back for a friend’s project. Needed a shot of an old bike that looked like a flatbed scan.

The North American Handmade Bicycle Show was in Indianapolis this year, and I once again set up the studio. Black and white seamless backdrops, all the space in the world and some photo volunteers to help keep a schedule and bring builders back for photography. The goal: shoot at least one bike from each manufacturer and portraits of as many as possible. Mission accomplished. 4 days, 1450+ images, nearly 70 builders and some 100+ bikes. See the Urban Velo coverage. Also, official NAHBS website and BIKE Magazine coverage.
For the photo nerds; Nikon D700 w/ 99% of the images shot with 85mm Nikon 1.8 lens. ISO 200, 1/250, f9-11. Lights; two Alien Bees B400 lights at full power with 32in metallic umbrellas and Alien Bees ABR800 w/ grid ringflash at 1/64 – 1/8 power as fill.
Living room shoot for an upcoming Urban Velo wheelbuilding article. The Alien Bees lights are currently on the way to Portland.
Based upon my work at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show last year, I got the call last night to shoot for the show itself. February 8-10. I’ll be there in Portland, Oregon doing my best to shoot bikes from every builder for both the internal use of the Handmade Show and for coverage within Urban Velo. Can’t wait, should be a good one.
